Journey - another way

Exhibition by Jane Spencer

Pathways, roads, pilgrimages and progressions along the way - these can all be understood as metaphors for our own inner psychological and spiritual journey. The past impinges on the present, and the present will in turn impinge on what is to come.

Jane Spencer - Stepping Stones Jane Spencer - In Transit

Starting work on a new painting is to undertake a journey into the unknown - not knowing where it is going to lead. Initially, chaos is created on the canvas, then, during the process of making, the surface is built up and progressively stripped away. Paint is dripped, thrown, splashed, stroked and brushed onto the canvas in a seemingly random yet controlled way. Previous marks are left partially exposed during an extended process of doing, undoing and re-doing. The finished piece resonates with hints of previous histories and experiences.

Visual inspiration is derived from defaced, abandoned, overlooked or forgotten objects in urban settings. These images are collected, drawn or photographed and later, in the studio, referenced and subverted, until they distil themselves into lines, circles and areas of emptiness.

Jane Spencer originally studied fine art and went on to make a career in printed textile design. Twelve years ago she began painting again, holding her first solo exhibition 'Ship of Fools' in 1998. After a growing interest in the field of public art, she gained a degree in Art for Community in 2000. During the last seven years she has held seven solo shows and participated in over seventy group exhibitions. Her work can be found in domestic, corporate and healthcare settings. Three of her paintings on the theme of 'Time' are in the permanent collection of the Institute of Physics. She works closely with NHS Trusts to create site-specific artwork in hospitals. An innovative printmaker, she is also currently studying both thrown and hand built ceramics.
