“Transcending the Legacies of Slavery: A Psychoanalytic View”
Karnac Books (2011)
The Book
In this book Barbara Fletchman Smith explores the circularity of the trauma of slavery which continues to affect the structure of family, the internal life of the individual and the relationships between African Caribbean men and women and parents and children. Slavery was almost successful in splitting procreation from maternity and paternity.
It is suggested that the trauma can be worked with, and that ultimately it is individuals who will take responsibility for transcending the legacies of slavery.
