Introduction to Theoretical Models of Psychoanalytic Thought

YEAR 1: Introduction to Theoretical Models of Psychoanalytic Thought

This 1-year, three-term course is offered as an educational experience for anyone interested in psychoanalysis and in the process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. It can be taken as a stand-alone introductory year, or as a prelude to the comprehensive 2-year programme. The content includes, and focuses upon, the background and evolution of psychoanalytic theory and practice, and the key figures and concepts that have shaped that evolution, alongside a weekly Experiential Group.

Foundation Year 1 takes place on Wednesday evenings, over 3 terms (1 Module per term) from October through July. There are 10 seminars + 10 experiential groups per term.

Aims

The course sets out to:

  • introduce the student to an overview of the subject in both its historic and contemporary context
  • familiarize the student with the main figures, themes, ideas, issues and debates within the field
  • acquaint the student with both the character and the evolution of psychoanalytic thinking
  • enable the student to comprehend a psychoanalytic attitude to thinking and behaviour
  • foster a reflective and critical attitude to the study of the subject

Course Structure

YEAR 1: INTRODUCTION TO THEORETICAL MODELS OF PSYCHOANALYTIC THOUGHT

Term 1 / Module 1        Concepts and Contexts
Term 2 / Module 2        Exploring Key Psychoanalytic Themes
Term 3 / Module 3        Contemporary Theories

In the first year, each of the taught seminars is followed by an experiential group.

Pre-Requisites for Foundation Year 1: Applicants are expected to have a lively interest in the subject, to show an ability to cope with the substantial academic and intellectual demands of the programme, and the emotional maturity, consideration and responsibility required to participate in the experiential programme.

Course requirements: Students are expected to attend all seminars, undertake the required reading and prepare to both contribute and participate in presentations within the group. Students are informed of both the required and the recommended reading well in advance of the programme. Progress is monitored via self-assessment, and through teachers’ and tutor’s termly reports. Students are also encouraged to attend the ongoing programme of public lectures and events.

Written work: Students are asked to submit a ‘reflective’ paper (max. 2000 words) on the experience of the course, showing evidence of both comprehension and individual thinking in relation to some aspect of the taught programme in which they have developed an interest.

(NB: While the taught components are identical, the assessable components/ requirements for the MA Programme differ from those of the Foundation Course [Link to MA]).

Students in either year can apply to enroll in the Infant Observation module, both of which may be taken as an additional educational component of psychoanalytic theory and practice, but is a requirement for those intending to apply for the 3-year Qualifying Course.
