It is also open to qualified child psychotherapists with substantial experience of working with adult patients. The course aims to promote high standards of clinical practice. The emphasis is on developing further a capacity to work intensively and in greater depth with patients.

The next course starts in January 2010 and applications are welcomed now.

Course content

The LCP Membership Course consists of two years of theoretical/clinical seminars with senior practitioners in the profession, and two years of supervision of two three-times-weekly patients with two supervisors who must be approved by the Membership Committee. In some cases, with the approval of the committee, one supervision may be reduced to fortnightly in the second year.

Themes to be explored

This course focuses on intensive work with particularly difficult patients who challenge treatability.

Year One

Term 1: Perverse states of mind
Term 2: Contemporary diagnostic formulations
Term 3: Perspectives on transference and countertransference

Year Two

Term 1: Patients who are difficult to reach
Term 2: Enactments and difficulties in thinking
Term 3: Psychic change

Seminars are led by psychoanalytic psychotherapists, psychoanalysts and analytical psychologists.

Tutors are provided for members of the course to support their development. Further therapy or analysis may be required at the discretion of the Membership Committee.

Qualification

Qualification is based primarily on the reports provided by supervisors. Seminar leaders' reports are also taken into consideration. Students whose original qualification was with a BPC organisation will on satisfactory completion of the course be awarded Senior Membership of the LCP; students whose original training was with a non-BPC organisation will be awarded Membership of the LCP.
